IGCSE Environmental Management 0680 Paper 2 Drill Guide: Evidence, Concepts, Responses

IGCSE Environmental Management 0680 Paper 2 Drill Guide: Evidence, Concepts, Responses

  • 2026-11-04

From the data back to a management decision

Paper 2 turns resources and data into management decisions. Every question carries a resource or a case, and marks come from three moves: quote the evidence read from the data, use a course concept to explain the pressure it represents, and propose a workable response with its cost stated. The usual losses are retelling the case with no management judgement, or offering empty measures such as more education without saying who acts, for whom, and how success is measured. Fill those three cells on every answer and the longer responses settle.

How is IGCSE Environmental Management 0680 Paper 2 assessed, and what does each part carry?

Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management): 80 marks: short-answer and structured questions, plus one extended res (80 · 50%); Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context): 80 marks: short-answer items, data processing and analysis, and an ext (80 · 50%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management) 80 marks: short-answer and structured questions, plus one extended response that uses the source material; all questions compulsory 80 · 50% 1 h 45 min
Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context) 80 marks: short-answer items, data processing and analysis, and an extended response that uses the source material; all questions compulsory 80 · 50% 1 h 45 min

Paper 2 technique: 80 marks in 1 h 45 min is about 1.3 minutes per mark. In data questions copy the figures out, write the formula, then substitute: density = individuals / sampled area; frequency = quadrats containing the species / total quadrats x 100; Simpson’s D = 1 – sum(n/N)^2; earthquake energy ratio = 10^(1.5 x magnitude difference); return period = (N + 1) / rank; doubling time = 70 / growth rate in per cent. Fieldwork answers need method, variables, safety and limitations.

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management) calculations first, extended response last The case is retold with no management judgement.
Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context) process the data table first, extended response last Measures are vague, with no agent or indicator.

What is each IGCSE Environmental Management 0680 Paper 2 paper really testing, and what should you drill?

Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management): calculations first, extended response last; Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context): process the data table first, extended response last

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

Should drilling go by topic first or by year?

By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: data reading only, five minutes per resource to fill three columns of trend, affected party and source of pressure. Weeks 4-6: pairing evidence with concepts, one sentence for the evidence and one for the concept it maps to. Weeks 7-9: timed papers, logging reading time and whether each measure named an agent, a target group and a success indicator. Weeks 10-12: unseen years only, adding one sentence on the cost or limit of every measure.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management) 1 h 45 min about 1.3 min per mark
Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context) 1 h 45 min about 1.3 min per mark

How should the time be split inside each IGCSE Environmental Management 0680 Paper 2 paper?

Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management): about 1.3 min per mark; Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context): about 1.3 min per mark

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
Density over quadrat number Dividing 46 by 20 Density uses the sampled area of 5 m2 9.2 per m2
Frequency confused with density Counting individuals for frequency Frequency is the share of quadrats A 90%
Simpson’s index without squaring Summing n/N only D = 1 – sum(n/N)^2 0.676
Earthquake energy compared linearly Assuming M6 releases twice M5 The energy ratio is 10^1.5 about 31.6 times
Doubling time by multiplying the rate Estimating 2.1 x 10 Use the rule of 70, that is 70 / 2.1 about 33.3 years
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Three columns: the item and the skill (data reading, concept mapping, measure design, evaluation, calculation); whether the loss was retelling the case, a misapplied concept, a vague measure, a missing cost, or the clock; the repair, naming the evidence-concept pair to redo or the cost sentence to add. Three losses in one skill takes the next week.

08

How many years should you drill?

The paper structure and skill spread have been stable for years, so five to eight years covers data-response, case and evaluation items; resource booklets change their cases and figures, so older papers are practice only, with scope checked against the current specification.

How many years of past papers is enough?

The paper structure and skill spread have been stable for years, so five to eight years covers data-response, case and evaluation items; resource booklets change their cases and figures, so older papers are practice only, with scope checked against the current specification.

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IGCSE Environmental Management 0680 Paper 2 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IGCSE Environmental Management 0680 Paper 2 mock papers linked under Related.

By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.

How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.

How many measures should an answer give?
Two specific ones beat five named only. Each needs an agent, a target group, a method and an indicator; two complete sets usually outscore a list of slogans.

How many figures should a data answer quote?
One or two key ones, with the trend they show. Copying every figure is transcription; marks come from interpreting them for the decision.
