IGCSE Environmental Management Drilling Guide (0680): Paper 1 Calculations, Pacing and a 12-Week Plan

IGCSE Environmental Management Drilling Guide (0680): Paper 1 Calculations, Pacing and a 12-Week Plan

TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · IGCSE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 0680 PAPER 1

Built on Cambridge IGCSE Environmental Management 0680: Paper 1 and Paper 2 carry 50% each, 80 marks in 1 hour 45 with every question compulsory, and both end in a data-response extended answer. This page is the drilling method only – the calculation formulas, a 12-week timetable, pacing, the usual mark losses and the error log. For question practice use the original mocks linked below.

How is IGCSE Environmental Management assessed, and what does each part carry?

Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management): 80 marks: short-answer and structured questions, plus one extended res (80 · 50%); Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context): 80 marks: short-answer items, data processing and analysis, and an ext (80 · 50%)

Renewable energy in the field: a solar array beside wind turbines on farmland
Both papers are 80 marks in 1 hour 45; in the calculations the formula and the unit are worth more than the final figure.

Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management) 80 marks: short-answer and structured questions, plus one extended response that uses the source material; all questions compulsory 80 · 50% 1 h 45 min
Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context) 80 marks: short-answer items, data processing and analysis, and an extended response that uses the source material; all questions compulsory 80 · 50% 1 h 45 min

Paper 1 technique: 80 marks in 1 h 45 min is about 1.3 minutes per mark. Show the formula and the unit in every calculation: years of reserves = reserves / annual extraction; net erosion = erosion minus soil formation; topsoil mass = depth x bulk density x 1000; water stress compares availability per person with 1700 m3; mixed BOD is weighted by flow; a percentage rise takes the original value as the denominator. For the extended response state a position, give two or three data-based points and finish by comparing the strategies.

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management) calculations first, extended response last Calculations give the figure only, so the formula and unit marks are lost
Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context) process the data table first, extended response last The extended response is left to the last three minutes and cut off after two lines

What is each IGCSE Environmental Management paper really testing, and what should you drill?

Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management): calculations first, extended response last; Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context): process the data table first, extended response last

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

Should drilling go by topic first or by year?

By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: The 12 weeks are built on calculations: weeks 1-3 take one formula family a week (reserve years, net erosion and topsoil mass, water pressure and per-capita availability), writing formula, substitution and unit every time; weeks 4-6 move to the data questions (density, frequency, Simpson index) and start reading trends off graphs; weeks 7-9 sit whole papers on the clock at about 1.3 minutes a mark, reserving twenty-five minutes for the extended response; weeks 10-12 alternate both papers, keeping the last run for your weakest topic.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management) 1 h 45 min about 1.3 min per mark
Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context) 1 h 45 min about 1.3 min per mark

How should the time be split inside each IGCSE Environmental Management paper?

Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management): about 1.3 min per mark; Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context): about 1.3 min per mark

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
Reserve life over total extraction Dividing by 4800 The denominator is the annual 160 30 years
Erosion taken as soil formation Reporting 0.8 tonnes per hectare Net loss is 12.0 – 0.8 11.2 tonnes per hectare per year
Missing the 1000 conversion 0.15 x 1.35 = 0.2025 kg 1 tonne per m3 is 1000 kg per m3 202.5 kg per m2
Mixed BOD as a simple average (48 + 2) / 2 Weight by flow instead about 4.7 mg per litre
Percentage rise over the new value Using 1900 as the denominator A percentage rise uses the original 700 171.4%
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Three columns: formula (right one, and is the denominator the annual figure or the total), unit (did the conversion multiply by the right factor), judgement (does the extended response answer the command word). Three entries in one column in a week means that column only next week – the arithmetic is rarely wrong here, the numerator and denominator swap places, so write the formula column in words: divided by what.

08

How many years should you drill?

0680 has enough past papers for by-year drilling: take the three most recent Paper 1 papers to locate your fixed leaks (mostly the wrong denominator and the unit conversion), then work older papers topic by topic. The case-study regions change but the calculation types do not; time yourself and weight by the current syllabus.

09

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IGCSE Environmental Management drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IGCSE Environmental Management mock papers linked under Related.

By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.

How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.

Must the formula be written even when the answer is right?
A right answer without a formula usually takes the answer mark only and forfeits the method marks; a correct formula and substitution with a wrong final figure keeps most of the method marks. Write the extra line – formula, substitution, unit.

Do the two papers overlap – is Paper 1 alone enough?
No. They are 50% each: Paper 1 leans on principles, Paper 2 on applied contexts and data handling, and the same formulas reappear in different settings. Drilling one paper gives away half the marks; from week 7 alternate them so each formula is recognised in both dressings.
