IGCSE Physical Education 0413 Paper 1: Anatomy, Physiology and Fitness

IGCSE Physical Education 0413 Paper 1: Anatomy, Physiology and Fitness

  • 2026-11-03

PE: anatomy, fitness and skill in three parallel lines

Marks in PE are rarely lost through ignorance; they are lost because the answer stops at common sense. A candidate says aerobic training is needed but cannot name the response of the heart, lungs and muscles, or says practice is needed without separating skill learning from fitness training. Marks are awarded for terms and mechanisms, so drilling means converting observation into textbook language.

How is IGCSE Physical Education 0413 Paper 1 assessed, and what does each part carry?

Paper 1 (Theory): Short and structured questions, 100 marks (50%); Component 2 (Coursework): four activities, 25 marks each, 100 marks (50%)

01

Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Paper 1 (Theory) Short and structured questions, 100 marks 50% 1 h 45 min
Component 2 (Coursework) four activities, 25 marks each, 100 marks 50% assessed at school across the course

Paper 1 has no multiple choice: 100 marks must all be answered in 1 h 45 min, about a minute a mark. Structured marks are given by step, so write the principle or definition first (for example cardiac output = stroke volume x heart rate), then substitute the figures from the question, then give the unit and one sentence of explanation. Answers that show formula, substitution and unit collect the method marks, and explanations need a cause and a consequence rather than a conclusion.

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Paper 1 (Theory) take the parts in order, bank the steps The answer says exercise is good without naming the response of the heart, lungs, muscles and temperature control, and without the long-term adaptations training produces.
Component 2 (Coursework) four activities from at least two categories Skill-learning answers count repetitions instead of separating the cognitive, associative and autonomous stages, and cannot say what feedback and demonstration do at each stage.

What is each IGCSE Physical Education 0413 Paper 1 paper really testing, and what should you drill?

Paper 1 (Theory): take the parts in order, bank the steps; Component 2 (Coursework): four activities from at least two categories

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

Should drilling go by topic first or by year?

By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: bones, muscles and joints. Name the structure, give its role in the movement, then add one line on injury risk.\nWeeks 4-6: cardiorespiratory and energy systems. Draw short, medium and long intensity on one timeline and reuse that single diagram.\nWeeks 7-9: fitness and training principles. Every plan must state intensity, frequency, time and the component it targets.\nWeeks 10-12: whole papers to time, minutes matched to marks; redo only the mechanism and data-reading errors.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Paper 1 (Theory) 1 h 45 min about 1 min per mark, 8 to check
Component 2 (Coursework) assessed at school across the course four activities spread across the whole course, not one sitting

How should the time be split inside each IGCSE Physical Education 0413 Paper 1 paper?

Paper 1 (Theory): about 1 min per mark, 8 to check; Component 2 (Coursework): four activities spread across the whole course, not one sitting

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
Number without principle Writing 4.9 when asked to explain cardiac output Loses every explanation and application mark Principle or formula first, then the numbers, then one sentence of explanation
Missing units Writing 4.9 instead of 4.9 litres per minute One mark off each value Add litres per minute, kg, cm and per cent every time
Mixing up the energy systems Putting a 100 m sprint under aerobic supply The whole answer goes the wrong way Judge duration and intensity before choosing the system
Ignoring the data given Answering a percentage question from impression All calculation marks lost Work from the figures in the question, then write the conclusion
Pacing collapse Ten minutes on a three-mark question Later questions left blank Spend about a minute a mark and bank the questions you can do first
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Three columns in the error log: the question and the term that was missing; the marking points; and whether the loss was mechanism, terminology or graph reading. A mechanism error earns a quick flow diagram, because the same mechanism returns in movement, training and health items.

08

How many years should you drill?

The 0413 question style has been stable, and the last five sessions cover the main physiology and fitness topics; older papers still serve for calculation and graph reading, though the wording of training principles has moved on, so follow the current textbook.

How many years of past papers is enough?

09

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IGCSE Physical Education 0413 Paper 1 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IGCSE Physical Education 0413 Paper 1 mock papers linked under Related.

By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.

How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.

What should I write when I do not know the answer?
Name the structure or system the question is about, then add its function – those lines score even without a full conclusion, while a blank scores nothing.

How many figures must be memorised?
Only the normal values and training guidelines the textbook lists; everything else comes in the question. Always write the unit with the figure, since a missing unit is a common lost mark.

Next step: find a tutor / register as a tutor

After drilling, the hard part is telling a conceptual error from a writing error. Tell us the year group, the school and your available times, and TutorZone will match you with a tutor who knows the HKEAA assessment requirements.

Find a free tutor

Demand for tutors in this subject is steady, and those who can explain the marking scheme and where marks are won are especially sought after. Register free; you pay only when a match succeeds.
