IGCSE PE 0413 Drilling Guide: Paper 1 Pacing, Three-Step Calculations, 12 Weeks
- 2026-11-01
TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · IGCSE PE 0413
Built on the Cambridge 0413 syllabus (2025-2027 sessions): Paper 1 is 100 marks in 1 hour 45 minutes of short answer and structured questions with no multiple choice, worth 50%; Component 2 is four sports at 25 marks each, 100 marks, also 50%. Method only: pacing Paper 1 at roughly a mark a minute, the three-step calculation answer, what the four sports recordings must show, a 12-week plan, the usual mark losses and the error log.
How is IGCSE Physical Education 0413 assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 1 (Theory): Short and structured questions, 100 marks (50%); Component 2 (Coursework): four activities, 25 marks each, 100 marks (50%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Theory) | Short and structured questions, 100 marks | 50% | 1 h 45 min |
| Component 2 (Coursework) | four activities, 25 marks each, 100 marks | 50% | assessed at school across the course |
Paper 1 has no multiple choice: 100 marks must all be answered in 1 h 45 min, about a minute a mark. Structured marks are given by step, so write the principle or definition first (for example cardiac output = stroke volume x heart rate), then substitute the figures from the question, then give the unit and one sentence of explanation. Answers that show formula, substitution and unit collect the method marks, and explanations need a cause and a consequence rather than a conclusion.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Theory) | take the parts in order, bank the steps | Paper 1 short answers grow into paragraphs, three lines for a one-mark part, so the six-mark structures at the back get four minutes; calculations jump to the answer with no formula or substitution, losing every method mark, and units go missing (a heart rate of 180 with no bpm) |
| Component 2 (Coursework) | four activities from at least two categories | All four Component 2 sports are filmed in the last term, so every clip shows practice rather than competitive play, and the four chosen sports sit in the same category (four ball games), missing the spread the syllabus asks for |
What is each IGCSE Physical Education 0413 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (Theory): take the parts in order, bank the steps; Component 2 (Coursework): four activities from at least two categories
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Twelve weeks run theory and practical side by side, because each half is 50% and neither can be recovered late. Weeks 1-4 take Paper 1 topic by topic: one system a week (skeletal and muscular, respiratory, circulatory, energy), one past paper on that topic a week, timed, with every calculation written as formula, substitution, unit. Weeks 5-8 sit one full Paper 1 a week under 1 h 45 timing, and put the four sports recordings into the calendar, one sport every two weeks, each with competitive play. Weeks 9-10 work only from the error log, redoing each wrong question and explaining the principle aloud. Week 11 is two full papers for pacing (about a mark a minute, eight minutes kept for checking); week 12 reviews the four assessment grids and repairs the weakest sport.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Theory) | 1 h 45 min | about 1 min per mark, 8 to check |
| Component 2 (Coursework) | assessed at school across the course | four activities spread across the whole course, not one sitting |
How should the time be split inside each IGCSE Physical Education 0413 paper?
Paper 1 (Theory): about 1 min per mark, 8 to check; Component 2 (Coursework): four activities spread across the whole course, not one sitting
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Number without principle | Writing 4.9 when asked to explain cardiac output | Loses every explanation and application mark | Principle or formula first, then the numbers, then one sentence of explanation |
| Missing units | Writing 4.9 instead of 4.9 litres per minute | One mark off each value | Add litres per minute, kg, cm and per cent every time |
| Mixing up the energy systems | Putting a 100 m sprint under aerobic supply | The whole answer goes the wrong way | Judge duration and intensity before choosing the system |
| Ignoring the data given | Answering a percentage question from impression | All calculation marks lost | Work from the figures in the question, then write the conclusion |
| Pacing collapse | Ten minutes on a three-mark question | Later questions left blank | Spend about a minute a mark and bank the questions you can do first |
The error log and the mark scheme
Four columns: principle (is the definition or formula right — cardiac output equals stroke volume times heart rate), steps (formula, substitution, unit in every calculation), layer (does the explanation carry both cause and consequence, or only a conclusion), time (did short answers overrun). Losses in PE are rarely “did not know”; they are knowing but not writing in the required shape, so columns two and three get checked question by question.
How many years should you drill?
0413 keeps Paper 1 plus internal assessment through 2025-2027: 100 marks in 1 h 45, half the qualification, with Component 2 taking the other half; question types have been stable, so five sessions cover the topics. Exercise science figures are revised from year to year (recommended activity guidelines, for instance), so data questions in older papers need checking against the current guidance, while the four-sport assessment is scored the same way each year and past candidates recordings teach more than past questions.

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IGCSE Physical Education 0413 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IGCSE Physical Education 0413 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
Paper 1 has no multiple choice. How should the 1 h 45 be divided?
Pace at roughly a mark a minute and keep the last eight minutes for checking. Scan the whole paper first, ring the structures worth six marks or more and take the long questions you are sure of early, so the high-value questions get time; keep short answers to one or two minutes each — a one-mark part needs a sentence, and writing more earns nothing while eating the time behind it.
When should the four Component 2 sports be prepared?
As early as possible, because each sport has to be assessed in competitive play and the season is not the candidate s to choose. Ideally the four are fixed in the first year of the course, checked against the spread of activity categories the syllabus requires, with at least two clips per sport against different opponents, showing the candidate, the official and the scoreboard; filming in the last term usually captures practice only, and the mark drops.
