What this paper covers

The first passage is a week of weather data: daily temperatures of 24, 26, 27, 28, 30, 31 and 30 degrees give a total of 196, a mean of 28, a maximum of 31 on Saturday, a minimum of 24 and a range of 7; rainfall of 12 mm on each weekday plus 25 mm on Saturday and none on Sunday totals 85 mm. The second passage plans a country park trip: three coaches seating 45 each carry 135 people, six are teachers, so 129 students pay HK$22 fare each (HK$2,838) and HK$18 for lunch (HK$2,322), grouped three to a team, giving 43 teams. Knowledge items cover the 365 day orbit, the 29.5 day lunar cycle, the three states of water, Dongjiang water, solar panels, the small intestine, earthquake drills, the Antiquities and Monuments Office, influenza and what soil does for roots. A sample question reads: the seven daily temperatures are 24, 26, 27, 28, 30, 31 and 30 degrees, so what is the mean? The working adds to 196, divides by seven and gives 28 degrees; the range part subtracts the coldest day, 24, from the warmest, 31, giving 7 degrees, and names Saturday as the hottest day. In the trip passage pupils divide 129 students by three to reach 43 teams and show the fare total of HK$2,838 separately from the lunch total of HK$2,322. Errors to watch are averaging only six days, subtracting in the wrong order and dropping the remainder. Method marks reward a correct subtraction even when the mental arithmetic slips. Weather data suits a wall chart: plot the seven temperatures, shade the rainy days, then check the mean, maximum, range and rainfall total; the trip budget can be checked against a real coach quote.
