Paper details Level: Primary 4 | Subject: General Studies | Time: 45 minutes | Total: 100 marks | Questions: 9

Part A — Healthy living (25 marks)

# Question Answer
1 Name three healthy living habits. (9 marks) A balanced diet, about an hour of exercise a day, enough sleep, washing hands, good posture; any three, 3 marks each.
2 Why should you avoid hard exercise straight after a meal? (8 marks) Because blood is busy with digestion after eating (4 marks), and hard exercise pulls it to the muscles, which slows digestion (4 marks).
3 A classmate says: I sleep six hours a night and I am not ill, so sleep does not matter. Point out one problem with this. (8 marks) Not being ill now does not mean the amount is enough (4 marks); too little sleep affects memory, attention and growth, and the effects appear later (4 marks).

Part B — Community and rules (25 marks)

# Question Answer
4 Name two public facilities in your neighbourhood and one use of each. (8 marks) For example a library (borrowing, quiet study), a park (exercise, rest), a market (buying food); 4 marks each: name 2, use 2.
5 Why does a housing estate have a rule against loud noise after ten at night? (9 marks) Night is rest time (3 marks); noise disturbs sleep and health (3 marks); the rule protects everyone right to rest (3 marks).
6 Someone says rules only limit freedom. Use one example to show a rule also protects freedom. (8 marks) Traffic lights limit crossing anywhere, but protect the freedom to cross safely (example 4, explanation 4).

Part C — Basic science (25 marks)

# Question Answer
7 You squeeze a balloon and it changes shape. What does this show about force? (7 marks) Force can change the shape of an object (7 marks).
8 A torch shines on a piece of card and a shadow appears. What does the shape of the shadow depend on? (8 marks) On the shape of the card (4 marks), because light travels in straight lines and the card blocks it (4 marks).
9 Compare moving the card closer to the torch and further away. How does the shadow change and why? (10 marks) Closer: the shadow grows (3 marks). Further: it shrinks (3 marks). Because the card blocks more light when closer (4 marks).

Part D — Pictogram (25 marks)

Sports chosen by the class (each symbol = 2 pupils)

# Question Answer
10 Which activity has the most pupils, and how many? (6 marks) Football, 5 symbols times 2 equals 10 pupils.
11 How many more pupils chose badminton than skipping? (6 marks) Badminton 8, skipping 4, a difference of 4.
12 If football is played in groups of 4, how many groups and how many left over? (6 marks) 10 divided by 4 gives 2 groups with 2 left over.
13 There are four classes with similar results. Estimate how many pupils in the school chose table tennis. (7 marks) About 6 per class, so about 24 in the school.
