Primary 5 Maths: Area of Triangles, Parallelograms and Trapeziums — 10 Practice Questions with Answers

Three area formulas get mixed up easily: a triangle needs ÷ 2, a parallelogram does not, and a trapezium is (a + b) × h ÷ 2. These ten items deliberately mix them so the pupil names the formula first every time.

Quick answer 10 questions, about 25 minutes. Items 04 to 07 work backwards to a base or height and cause the most lost marks; mark only after finishing.

02 Questions (10 items)

  1. FoundationA triangle has base 8 cm and height 5 cm. Find its area.
  2. FoundationA parallelogram has base 12 m and height 7 m. Find its area.
  3. FoundationA trapezium has parallel sides 6 cm and 10 cm, height 4 cm. Find its area.
  4. FoundationA triangle has area 36 cm² and base 9 cm. Find its height.
  5. IntermediateA parallelogram has area 96 m² and base 12 m. Find its height.
  6. IntermediateA trapezium has parallel sides 5 m and 9 m and area 42 m². Find its height.
  7. IntermediateA triangle has base 1.2 m and height 0.8 m. Find its area.
  8. ChallengeA triangle and a parallelogram share the same base and height. What fraction of the parallelogram is the triangle?
  9. ChallengeA trapezium flower bed has parallel sides 4 m and 6 m and height 5 m. Three plants are grown per m². How many plants in total?
  10. Error redoA triangle has base 15 cm and height 6 cm. Find its area. (common slip: forgetting ÷ 2 and answering 90 cm²)

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 20 cm² Base × height ÷ 2 = 8 × 5 ÷ 2.
2 84 m² For a parallelogram, no halving: base × height.
3 32 cm² (a + b) × h ÷ 2 = 16 × 4 ÷ 2.
4 8 cm Reverse the formula: area × 2 ÷ base.
5 8 m Height = area ÷ base; do not double.
6 6 m Height = area × 2 ÷ (a + b) = 84 ÷ 14.
7 0.48 m² Work with decimals: 1.2 × 0.8 = 0.96, then ÷ 2.
8 1/2 The triangle formula has an extra ÷ 2, so it is exactly half.
9 75 plants Area is 25 m², then × 3.
10 45 cm² 15 × 6 = 90 is the parallelogram; a triangle needs one more ÷ 2.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
