Primary 5 Maths: Triangle, Parallelogram and Trapezium Area — Practice Paper 2 (10 Questions)

Paper 2 puts the three formulas inside one figure: split a composite shape first, and reverse the formula when a height is missing. Name the formula before you calculate.

Quick answer 10 questions, about 25 minutes. Items 05 and 06 work backwards to a height and item 07 is a composite shape; mark after finishing.

  1. FoundationA triangle has base 9 cm and height 4 cm. Find its area.
  2. FoundationA parallelogram has base 15 m and height 6 m. Find its area.
  3. FoundationA trapezium has parallel sides 7 cm and 13 cm, height 5 cm. Find its area.
  4. FoundationA rectangle is 8 cm by 5 cm and is cut along a diagonal. Find the area of one triangle.
  5. IntermediateA trapezium has area 60 m² and parallel sides 4 m and 8 m. Find its height.
  6. IntermediateA triangle has area 0.36 m² and base 0.9 m. Find its height.
  7. IntermediateA shape is a 12 cm by 5 cm rectangle with a triangle on top (base 12 cm, height 4 cm). Find its total area.
  8. ChallengeA parallelogram flower bed has base 20 m and height 8 m. Four plants grow per m². How many plants in total?
  9. ChallengeA trapezium field has parallel sides 5 m and 9 m and height 6 m. Fertiliser is 0.5 kg per m². How many kg are needed?
  10. Error redoA trapezium has parallel sides 3 cm and 7 cm and height 4 cm. Find its area. (common slip: skipping ÷ 2 and answering 40 cm²)

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 18 cm² Base × height ÷ 2 = 9 × 4 ÷ 2.
2 90 m² No halving for a parallelogram: 15 × 6.
3 50 cm² (7 + 13) × 5 ÷ 2 = 100 ÷ 2.
4 20 cm² The triangle is exactly half the rectangle: 40 ÷ 2.
5 10 m Height = area × 2 ÷ (a + b) = 120 ÷ 12.
6 0.8 m Height = 0.36 × 2 ÷ 0.9 = 0.72 ÷ 0.9.
7 84 cm² Work in parts and add: 60 + 24.
8 640 plants Area is 160 m², then × 4.
9 21 kg Area is 42 m², then × 0.5.
10 20 cm² 10 × 4 = 40 is the parallelogram; a trapezium needs one more ÷ 2.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
