Primary 6 Maths: Applications of Percentages — Practice Paper 4

Paper 4 links fractions, decimals and percentages: converting 25% and 3/5, taking 35% of an amount, then two discounts, working back from a result, and the gap between boys and girls in a school.

Quick answer 10 questions, about 20 minutes. Items 01 to 03 convert between percentages and fractions and take 35% of $80; items 04 to 06 apply 10% then 20% off, work back from a 25% increase, and compare boys and girls in a school of 800; items 07 to 09 turn 0.4% into a decimal, set a price with a 25% profit, and find the total of two 10% cuts; item 10 redos a 20% rise then a 20% cut.

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 1/4 25% is 25 over 100, which reduces to 1 over 4.
2 60% 3 divided by 5 is 0.6, that is 60%.
3 $28 80 x 0.35 = 28.
4 $360 Two discounts multiply: 500 x 0.9 x 0.8 = 360.
5 120 150 is 125% of the original, so 150 divided by 1.25 is 120.
6 80 pupils Boys are 360 and girls are 440, a difference of 80.
7 0.004 0.4% is 0.4 divided by 100, that is 0.004.
8 $300 Price is cost times 1.25, so 240 x 1.25 = 300.
9 19% 0.9 x 0.9 = 0.81, so 19% is cut and not 20%.
10 Not correct: the result is 96% of the original, which is 4% lower 1.2 x 0.8 = 0.96, so the two changes do not cancel out.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
