Primary English Reading for Information, Paper 4: figures, inference and comparing texts

Work with percentages and changes, follow In addition and Unlike, infer from two sentences, and compare two texts with different aims.

Focus With percentages find the remainder first, treat Unlike as a difference, join two facts to infer, and always give the figure for how many.

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 1 050 bins Take 4 200 from 5 250; ?by how many? means subtract.
2 15% 60% plus 25% is 85%, so 15% of 100% is left.
3 at 9 a.m. The question asks for the start time, so answer 9 a.m.
4 it adds another point In addition adds a further point; it is not a contrast.
5 160 pupils Multiply 40 by 4 trips to get 160.
6 a contrast between the two libraries Unlike signals that the two libraries differ.
7 scrub Count the list in order; the second step is scrub.
8 the noise is disliked, yet not everyone wants a change Join both facts: noise is disliked but a move is not wanted by all.
9 Text B Listing dangers and warnings is the purpose of a warning text.
10 25% of the pupils took the bus. A how many question needs the figure, not a because clause.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
