Primary General Studies, Charts and Data Reading, Paper 1: axes, values and trends

Ten items on reading bars, a total of 84, a mean of 21, axis starts, 150% growth, a 37.5% fall, a $2,400 slice, line versus bar charts and a 2.0% visual trap.

Focus Read each value against the axis; the four years sum to 84 and average 21; an axis not starting at zero inflates gaps; the growth rate uses the earlier year as denominator, so (30 minus 12) over 12 gives 150%; loans fall by 6 thousand a year, 37.5% in all; 30% of $8,000 is $2,400; line graphs show trends and bars compare categories; 100 against 98 is only 2.0% apart; units decide what numbers mean.

# Answer One-line note
1 30 million. Read the value from the bar top against the axis rather than guessing from height.
2 12 + 18 + 24 + 30 = 84 million. A total is the sum of every bar value.
3 84 divided by 4 is 21 million. The mean is the total divided by the number of items.
4 If it starts above zero the visual gaps are exaggerated, so bars look far apart when the real values are close. The same numbers can look completely different with another starting point.
5 (30 minus 12) divided by 12 times 100% is 150%. The denominator is the earlier year, not the later one.
6 It drops by 6 thousand each year, and (48 minus 30) divided by 48 gives a 37.5% fall. A trend has direction and size, and the first year is still the base for the fall.
7 $8,000 times 30% is $2,400. Each slice of a pie chart is a share of the whole.
8 Line graphs suit trends over continuous time, such as average temperature by year; bar charts compare categories, such as the number of libraries in each district. Ask first whether you are showing change or comparing.
9 The real gap is 2, about 2.0%, nowhere near five times. A visual multiple is not a numerical multiple, so divide the real values.
10 Wrong. Units decide what the numbers mean, so a bar labelled 30 could be 30 people, 30 million or 30 billion. Read a chart in three steps: title, units, scale.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
