Primary General Studies: Reading Charts and Data (Paper 4)

Ten original questions on pie chart percentages, median and range, plus a bar chart whose axis does not start at zero. Pupils find part sizes, recover the whole, take medians of odd and even data sets and work back from a mean.

Direct answer For percentages decide whether the part or the whole is wanted. Sort the data before taking the median, and always check where the vertical axis starts before comparing bars.

  1. FoundationA pie chart shows the favourite sport of 200 pupils. Football takes 35%. How many pupils chose football?
  2. FoundationUsing the same pie chart, skipping rope takes 20% and basketball 25%. How many fewer pupils chose skipping rope than basketball?
  3. FoundationFive scores in order are 62, 75, 80, 88 and 95. What is the median score?
  4. FoundationFour values in order are 12, 15, 18 and 22. What is the median?
  5. IntermediateFour pupils have a mean of 45 stickers each. Three of them have 40, 42 and 48. How many does the fourth pupil have?
  6. IntermediateOne slice of a pie chart is 25% and stands for 50 pupils. How many pupils are there in total?
  7. IntermediateBooks lent in one week were 35, 42, 28, 50 and 47. What is the range of this set of data?
  8. ChallengeThe vertical axis of a bar chart starts at 80. Class A has 82 cups and class B has 88, so the bar looks far taller. What is the real difference?
  9. ChallengeThe mean of three tests is 72. The first two scores are 68 and 75. What is the third score?
  10. Error redoA pupil subtracts the second largest value from the largest to get the range. What is the correct range for 35, 42, 28, 50 and 47?

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 70 pupils (200 x 35% = 70). Multiply the total by the percentage to get the size of one part.
2 10 fewer pupils (50 – 40 = 10). Work out each part in pupils first, then compare the two parts.
3 80 marks (with an odd number of values the middle one is the median). Sort the values first; with an odd count the middle value is the median.
4 16.5 ((15 + 18) / 2 = 16.5). With an even count, average the two middle values.
5 50 stickers (45 x 4 – 40 – 42 – 48 = 50). Use the mean to find the total first, then subtract the three known values.
6 200 pupils (50 / 25% = 200). To get the whole from a part, divide the part by its percentage.
7 22 books (50 – 28 = 22). The range is the largest value minus the smallest value.
8 6 cups (88 – 82 = 6). An axis that does not start at zero exaggerates the gap; read the numbers, not the bar lengths.
9 73 marks (72 x 3 – 68 – 75 = 73). Multiply the mean by the number of tests to get the total, then subtract the known scores.
10 22 books (50 – 28 = 22), not 3. The range uses the largest minus the smallest; using the second largest makes it too small.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
