03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 At the start, as opening courtesy, and they rarely carry a question. Opening courtesies confirm the recording has begun; no need to copy them.
2 Nine to seventeen is eight hours; less the one-hour break leaves 7 hours. Work out the span first, then subtract the time not served.
3 It signals the details are handled later, so there is nothing to copy yet. Later means not here, so you can rest the pen.
4 Numbered lines, one point per line. Ordinals are the clearest copying signal; follow the numbering.
5 No position taken, with the decision handed back. Having no view is a stance: write undecided, not opposed.
6 Over half means more than fifty per cent, so the rise is at least twenty points, not exactly twenty. Keep approximations apart from exact figures; over and about are not exactly.
7 A key point or the answer is coming, so start writing at once. Changes of pace and pauses mark where questions are set.
8 Qualified support: the benefits are accepted but a key problem is raised. When both sides appear, write qualified rather than for or against.
9 The extra wrong item loses marks because it is not a suggestion. With a set number of items, stop at the number rather than risk a wrong one.
10 A dropped unit, which changes the value a hundredfold. Always copy the unit that follows a number: per cent, dollars, minutes.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
