DSE History: Chinese Civil War 1946-1949 (Tutor Prep Guide) — Chongqing talks, three campaigns, retreat to Taiwan

  • 2026-11-05

The lesson fixes the pattern where a student remembers only that the Nationalists had American aid and the Communists had Soviet support, and cannot explain how the larger, better-equipped side lost the mainland in three years.

Objectives — By the end students can (1) place the 1945 Chongqing talks, the 1946 full-scale war, the 1948 to 1949 campaigns and the 1949 retreat on a timeline; (2) explain the outcome through military, economic and popular-support lines; (3) separate reduced aid from American abandonment.

01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)

If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.

Skill Quick check Pass mark
The year the war with Japan ended Answer August 1945 A wrong year needs three minutes of repair or the whole timeline collapses
The KMT-CCP relationship during the war Answer that they fought Japan together but each preserved its strength An answer of permanent enemies must be corrected at once
What land reform means Explain in one sentence that farmland is redistributed Giving land to peasants is an acceptable answer

02 Lesson flow (45 minutes)

Time Stage Tutor does Student does
5 minutes Opening diagnosis Ask the class for three words on what happened between 1945 and 1949 Write alone, no books
8 minutes Timeline Draw a 1945 to 1949 line and fill talks, war, campaigns and retreat with the class Copy the line and add one sentence per point
12 minutes Three lines of analysis Use land reform and the gold yuan to show how economic and popular-support lines reinforce each other Complete one causal chain aloud
10 minutes Source question Hand out a 1948 gold yuan note and a grain requisition order, ask whose difficulty each shows Write two sentences quoting the source
5 minutes Trap check Write that the Nationalists lost when American aid stopped and ask students to refute it Refute with one year or figure
5 minutes Exit check Give three questions to finish independently Answer alone

03 Teaching script (read it out)

Scene 1: 1945: two rounds of talks, two unsolved questions

Write two dates on the board, August 1945 and June 1946, and ask what blocked the ten months in between. After two or three answers, explain: the Chongqing talks opened on 29 August 1945 and produced the Double Tenth Agreement, promising peace and a political consultative conference; the January 1946 conference even reached a draft on government reorganisation. Two questions were never settled: who would command the armies, and who would lead the state. Ask: if you held 1.2 million troops and the other side demanded your command authority, would you sign? The point is that the breakdown was structural, not personal.

Students write one sentence: the core question the Chongqing talks could not settle was ___.

Scene 2: 1947 to 1948: three lines turn at once

Give three facts: the Communists moved from guerrilla raids to mobile warfare, the government issued the gold yuan in August 1948, and land reform spread in the villages. Explain that in 1946 the Nationalists had roughly 4.3 million troops against about 1.2 million, with American equipment and an air force, so numbers alone predict the wrong winner. The gold yuan forced people to surrender gold and foreign currency while prices kept rising, wiping out urban savings; land reform tied the largest rural group to the other side. The front needed men and the rear needed grain from a society that no longer trusted the government. Ask whether holding cities in 1948 was an advantage or a burden.

Students write three lines, one each for military, economy and popular support, and name the decisive one.

Scene 3: 1948 to 1949: three campaigns and the retreat

Explain: Liaoshen from September 1948, Huaihai from November, Pingjin from December; after these the Nationalist main force was destroyed. Nanjing fell on 23 April 1949, the People’s Republic was proclaimed on 1 October 1949, and the government moved to Taiwan by the end of the year. Pause and ask why four months could decide what two years had not. Answer: the earlier attrition had already destroyed reserves, cut railways and destroyed trust in the currency. Military collapse was the result, not the starting point, so a tactical-error answer only reaches the surface.

Students write the full chain in three steps, each at least ten words.

Scene 4: Closing: join the three lines

On the board write resources on the left and capacity to mobilise on the right, put an equals sign between them and cross it out. Explain that the lesson is not about casualty figures but about the difference between having resources and being able to mobilise them. A side with more resources that cannot mobilise loses to a side with fewer resources that mobilises completely.

Students write one sentence distinguishing resources from mobilisation, with one example from the lesson.

04 Question types and worked steps

Type Example Steps Answer
Causal question (why) Why did the Nationalists lose the civil war between 1946 and 1949? 1 give the balance of forces 2 give the three lines: attrition, inflation, land reform 3 end with mobilisation capacity The Nationalists had more troops and equipment, but inflation lost urban support, land reform turned the countryside, and years of war exhausted reserves.
Comparison Compare Nationalist and Communist strengths and weaknesses in 1946 1 military: equipment and numbers vs mobility and morale 2 economic: aid and cities vs rural self-supply 3 political: recognition vs grassroots mobilisation The Nationalists led on equipment, air power and recognition but were weak on inflation; the Communists led on rural mobilisation and mobile warfare.
Source question (document or poster) A 1948 grain requisition order: complete the quota within three months 1 identify type and year 2 state the wartime need it shows 3 state its effect on popular support An official requisition order showing frontline grain pressure and forced extraction from the countryside, which provoked local resistance.
Essay (how far) American aid cut-off was the main reason for the Nationalist defeat. How far do you agree? 1 concede the effect of reduced aid in 1948 2 note defeats were mounting in 1946 to 1947 with aid still flowing 3 conclude that aid accelerated a structural failure Reduced aid accelerated collapse but cannot explain the defeats and inflation of 1947; the main cause was mobilisation capacity and popular base.
Sanity check (teach this): Keep the order fixed: Chongqing talks August 1945, full-scale war June 1946, three campaigns September 1948 to January 1949, Nanjing 23 April 1949, proclamation 1 October 1949. Give troop numbers as approximations, never precise to the thousand. Do not claim Soviet combat troops fought or that American forces intervened.

05 Independent practice (3 questions)

Question Answer What to watch
Use three years to explain how talks turned into decisive war Chongqing talks 1945, full-scale war 1946, three campaigns 1948 to 1949 Check that years are paired with events, not just a claim that they lost
Explain how inflation eroded urban support Gold yuan forced exchange, prices kept rising, savings destroyed, confidence fell Check that the double demand for soldiers and grain is mentioned
Why four months of campaigns changed the balance Main force destroyed, reserves exhausted, rail hubs lost Check that result is separated from starting point

06 Common mistakes and what to say

Mistake Student writes Say this
Treating the result as the cause The Nationalists lost the three campaigns, so they lost the mainland. The campaigns were the result. Explain the two years of attrition, inflation and land reform first, or the speed makes no sense.
Single external cause American aid stopped, so the government collapsed immediately. Aid was still arriving in 1946 and 1947 while defeats mounted. External aid accelerated a collapse that started at home.
Merging two events Nanjing fell on 1 October 1949 when the People’s Republic was founded. Nanjing fell on 23 April 1949; the proclamation was in Beijing on 1 October. Never merge them.
Wrong figures The Communists started with over four million troops. It is reversed: about 4.3 million Nationalist troops against about 1.2 million in 1946. Use approximations.

07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)

08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)

Question Answer Decision
Give the approximate 1946 strength of both sides and one Nationalist advantage About 4.3 million against 1.2 million; American equipment and air force Both needed; more troops alone is not mastery
Year and consequence of the gold yuan August 1948; prices kept rising and urban savings were destroyed Wrong year or calling it a cure means reteaching act two
One sentence on the mechanism of defeat More resources without mobilisation lose to fewer resources mobilised fully American aid for the wrong side means the mechanism is not yet understood

09 Tutor FAQ

Which year group is this for

Mainly S5; S6 classes revising twentieth-century China can use the same timeline as a quick recap.

Is forty-five minutes enough

Yes. The three acts model one causal chain and leave time for writing and refutation. Cut campaign detail before cutting student writing.

Do I need handouts

Only a gold yuan note image and one grain requisition order. Print figures as approximations so students do not memorise false precision.
