A-Level Business drilling technique: break-even = fixed costs / unit contribution; gross margin = gross profit / revenue; ROCE = net profit / capital employed; current ratio = current assets / current liabilities, with inventory removed for the acid test. Define before calculating in short answers, and always write the evaluation paragraph (AO4) in an essay – listing both sides without a judgement caps the marks.
How this paper was built

Drilling (5 demonstrated, 40 marks)
The full Paper 1 structure: four short answers of 5 marks plus a 20-mark essay.
Question 1 (5 marks)
A product has fixed costs of $120,000, a selling price of $25 and variable cost of $15 per unit. (a) Find the break-even output; (b) find the margin of safety at an output of 15,000 units.
Question 2 (5 marks)
A business has revenue of $480,000 and cost of sales of $288,000. Find the gross profit and the gross profit margin, and suggest one way to raise the margin.
Question 3 (5 marks)
A business earns a net profit of $48,000 on capital employed of $400,000. Find the return on capital employed (ROCE) and explain what a fall in ROCE may indicate.
Question 4 (5 marks)
A business has current assets of $150,000 (including $60,000 of inventory) and current liabilities of $75,000. Find the current ratio and the acid test ratio, and judge its short-term liquidity.
Question 5 (20 marks)
Essay: a retail chain faces rising rents and intensifying online competition. Evaluate two strategies: (a) raising prices to protect margins; (b) developing an online sales channel. Consider the impact on different stakeholders and reach a conclusion.
Which topics does this paper drill?
Direct answer: break-even and margin of safety, gross profit margin, return on capital employed, current and acid test ratios, plus a case-based strategy essay.
Answers and marks per question
Question 1
(a) Unit contribution = 25 – 15 = $10 (2), break-even = 120,000 / 10 = 12,000 units (2); (b) margin of safety = 15,000 – 12,000 = 3,000 units (1).
Question 2
Gross profit = 480,000 – 288,000 = $192,000 (2); margin = 192,000 / 480,000 = 40% (2); for example raise prices, cut purchasing costs or improve the product mix (1).
Question 3
ROCE = 48,000 / 400,000 = 12% (3); a fall may indicate weaker profitability or less efficient use of capital, such as too much inventory or too many receivables (2).
Question 4
Current ratio = 150,000 / 75,000 = 2.0:1 (2); acid test = (150,000 – 60,000) / 75,000 = 1.2:1 (2); both are above the usual benchmarks, so short-term liquidity looks sound (1).
Question 5
(a) Raising prices (8): protects the margin where demand is inelastic or the brand is premium, and shareholders gain in the short run; risks include losing customers to rivals, pressure on staff and long-run loss of market share.
(b) Online channel (8): widens the market, reduces dependence on expensive stores and improves cash flow, and is more convenient for customers; risks include set-up and delivery cost, cannibalisation of stores and the need for new IT capability.
Evaluation and conclusion (4): it depends on price elasticity and the capital available – with limited funds, piloting the online channel first and raising prices only where demand is inelastic is more defensible. A clear judgement with reasons is required (AO4).
How do I earn the evaluation marks in an essay?
Direct answer: end with a clear judgement and the reason for it, such as price elasticity or the capital available; listing both sides without deciding caps the marks at about half.
Where these marks are usually lost
| Mistake | What it looks like | What it costs | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Answer without working | Write 12,000 units | No method marks | Show unit contribution first |
| Ratio without units or form | Write 2 | It is not identifiable as a ratio | Write 2.0:1 |
| No evaluation paragraph | List both sides only | The AO4 marks are lost | End with a justified judgement |
