- 2026-10-16
TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · CAMBRIDGE A LEVEL BUSINESS 9609
Built on the Cambridge 9609 syllabus (2026-2028): Paper 1 (1 h 15 min, 40 marks, 40% of AS / 20% of A Level) is four short answers of 5 marks plus a 20-mark essay; Paper 2 (1 h 30 min, 60 marks, 60% of AS / 30% of A Level) is two data-response questions of 30 marks. The A Level adds Paper 3 (1 h 45 min, 60 marks, 30%) and Paper 4 (1 h 15 min, 40 marks, 20%). Method only: what each paper tests, the drill order, pacing, the usual mark losses, the error log and a 12-week timetable.

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Business Concepts 1) | AS content: Section A four short answers of 5 marks, Section B one essay of 20 marks | AS 40% / AL 20% | 1 h 15 min |
| Paper 2 (Business Concepts 2) | AS content: two data-response questions of 30 marks, six parts each | AS 60% / AL 30% | 1 h 30 min |
| Paper 3 (Business Decision-Making) | A Level content: five case-study questions (8 / 8 / 16 / 16 / 12 marks) | AL 30% | 1 h 45 min |
| Paper 4 (Business Strategy) | A Level content: two case-study essays, 40 marks | AL 20% | 1 h 15 min |
A-Level Business drilling technique: break-even = fixed costs / unit contribution; gross margin = gross profit / revenue; ROCE = net profit / capital employed; current ratio = current assets / current liabilities, with inventory removed for the acid test. Define before calculating in short answers, and always write the evaluation paragraph (AO4) in an essay – listing both sides without a judgement caps the marks.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Business Concepts 1) | define first, then calculate | Short answers give the number with no formula and ratios are written as a bare 2 instead of 2:1; essays list both sides and never write the evaluation, so the AO4 marks go |
| Paper 2 (Business Concepts 2) | read the data before answering | Answers ignore the data given, the working is never shown, and conclusions are written from impression; in a data-response question those marks cannot be recovered |
| Paper 3 (Business Decision-Making) | link every answer back to the case | Each answer drifts into textbook theory instead of the case evidence, and the 16-mark questions eat the clock until the last question has only minutes left |
| Paper 4 (Business Strategy) | make a clear judgement | Neither essay reaches a judgement, and only one stakeholder is considered, so the tension between shareholders, staff, customers and suppliers is missed |
What is each A-Level Business 9609 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (Business Concepts 1): define first, then calculate; Paper 2 (Business Concepts 2): read the data before answering; Paper 3 (Business Decision-Making): link every answer back to the case; Paper 4 (Business Strategy): make a clear judgement
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Business runs short-answer formulas, then data response, then case decisions, then strategy. Weeks 1-3 redo the four Paper 1 short-answer types (break-even, gross margin, ROCE, liquidity), writing the formula before the arithmetic and always giving ratios as 2.0:1. Weeks 4-6 take Paper 2 data response, eight to ten years of the same topic back to back, reading the data before writing. Weeks 7-9 cover the five Paper 3 case questions (8/8/16/16/12), each paper inside 1 h 45 with 25 minutes protected for every 16-mark question. Week 10 writes both Paper 4 essays in 35 minutes each, evaluation included. Week 11 works through the mark scheme question by question. Week 12 redoes only the recurring error types.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Business Concepts 1) | 1 h 15 min | about 6 min per short answer, 30 min for the essay |
| Paper 2 (Business Concepts 2) | 1 h 30 min | about 45 min per question |
| Paper 3 (Business Decision-Making) | 1 h 45 min | allow 25 min for each 16-mark question |
| Paper 4 (Business Strategy) | 1 h 15 min | about 35 min per essay |
How should the time be split inside each A-Level Business 9609 paper?
Paper 1 (Business Concepts 1): about 6 min per short answer, 30 min for the essay; Paper 2 (Business Concepts 2): about 45 min per question; Paper 3 (Business Decision-Making): allow 25 min for each 16-mark question; Paper 4 (Business Strategy): about 35 min per essay
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Answer without working | Write 12,000 units | No method marks | Show unit contribution first |
| Ratio without units or form | Write 2 | It is not identifiable as a ratio | Write 2.0:1 |
| No evaluation paragraph | List both sides only | The AO4 marks are lost | End with a justified judgement |
The error log and the mark scheme
Four columns: formula (which relationship was wrong or missing), ratio format (was it given as x:1 and was the unit labelled), use of the data (did the answer quote the figures in the case) and evaluation (is there a clear judgement with a reason). Only an error type that fills a cell three times deserves the last fortnight.
How many years should you drill?
Cambridge 9609 has official past papers for Papers 1-4 every year. Take the last five years of Paper 1 and Paper 2 first (AS content, the most stable shape), then the Paper 3 and Paper 4 case questions; the Paper 3 case changes every session, so the point is the method rather than the answer. The current syllabus covers the 2026-2028 sessions, and older sessions are worth taking topic by topic rather than as whole-paper mocks. Five years is the minimum, and topic-by-topic drilling wants eight to ten.

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the A-Level Business 9609 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the A-Level Business 9609 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
If I sit only the AS Level, do I need to drill Papers 3 and 4?
No. The AS Level is Paper 1 (40 marks, 40% of AS) and Paper 2 (60 marks, 60% of AS) only. If you plan to continue to the A Level a year later, the case analysis in Paper 3 and the strategy work in Paper 4 can start early topic by topic, since both rest on the AS ratios and market analysis.
How fluent do the calculations need to be?
Four relationships to five seconds each: break-even = fixed costs / unit contribution; gross margin = gross profit / revenue; ROCE = net profit / capital employed; current ratio = current assets / current liabilities, with inventory removed for the acid test. The marks that separate candidates are in the writing: state the formula, substitute, then label the unit.
