A-Level Economics 9708 Drill Guide: Method, Drill Order and Pacing

  • 2026-10-17

TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · CAMBRIDGE A-LEVEL ECONOMICS 9708

Built on the Cambridge 9708 syllabus (2026-2028): Paper 2 AS Data Response and Essays (60 marks, 2 h, 33% of A Level) and Paper 4 A Level Data Response and Essays (60 marks, 2 h, 33%) are the two written papers, while Paper 1 and Paper 3 multiple choice carry 30 marks and 17% each. Method only: what each paper tests, the drill order, pacing, the usual mark losses, the error log and a 12-week timetable.

How is A-Level Economics 9708 assessed, and what does each part carry?

Paper 2 (AS Data Response and Essays): data response 20 + micro 20 + macro 20 (33% A-Level); Paper 4 (A Level Data Response and Essays): data response 20 + micro 20 + macro 20 (33% A-Level)

Start with the data response: read the whole extract, write the formula and steps, then add the evaluative judgement.

Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Paper 2 (AS Data Response and Essays) data response 20 + micro 20 + macro 20 33% A-Level 2 h
Paper 4 (A Level Data Response and Essays) data response 20 + micro 20 + macro 20 33% A-Level 2 h

A-Level Economics drilling technique: Paper 2 essays need definition, diagram, explanation and evaluation. Show the formula and steps for calculations (PED, multiplier). Read the data before answering the data response.

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Paper 2 (AS Data Response and Essays) formula for calcs, definition + diagram in essays The data response is calculated before the whole extract is read, and essays give definitions without a diagram or an evaluation, so a 20-mark question usually lands at 11 to 13
Paper 4 (A Level Data Response and Essays) unstructured essays (no parts) Unstructured essays are answered as if they had parts: bullet points instead of an argument, an evaluation that repeats the body, and the clock usually runs out on the second question

What is each A-Level Economics 9708 paper really testing, and what should you drill?

Paper 2 (AS Data Response and Essays): formula for calcs, definition + diagram in essays; Paper 4 (A Level Data Response and Essays): unstructured essays (no parts)

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

Should drilling go by topic first or by year?

By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Economics runs in four blocks: micro, macro, the global economy, then timed whole papers. Weeks 1-3 drill micro only (elasticity, market failure, firms and market structure), drawing the supply-and-demand diagram and marking the shift every time. Weeks 4-6 take macro (AD/AS, policy instruments, inflation and unemployment), answered as definition, diagram, explanation. Weeks 7-9 move to the global economy (trade, exchange rates, globalisation) and start timed Paper 1 multiple choice at two minutes a question. Weeks 10-11 sit one full Paper 2 and one full Paper 4 a week. Week 12 redoes only the recurring error types and rewrites the evaluation paragraphs.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Paper 2 (AS Data Response and Essays) 2 h 25 min data, 45 min each essay
Paper 4 (A Level Data Response and Essays) 2 h same pace as Paper 2

How should the time be split inside each A-Level Economics 9708 paper?

Paper 2 (AS Data Response and Essays): 25 min data, 45 min each essay; Paper 4 (A Level Data Response and Essays): same pace as Paper 2

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
Wrong PED sign Positive PED PED is normally negative PED = -2
Elasticity/revenue Elastic, price up raises revenue Elastic: price up lowers revenue Elastic: price up lowers revenue
Multiplier formula 1/MPC Multiplier is 1/(1-MPC) Multiplier = 1/(1-MPC)
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Four columns: diagrams (shift marked, axes and equilibrium labelled), calculations (formula, steps and units complete), argument (a topic sentence and evidence in every paragraph) and evaluation (a counter-case and a judgement, not a repeat of the body). Only an error type that fills a cell three times deserves the last fortnight.

08

How many years should you drill?

9708 has official Papers 1-4 every session. Start with the last five years of Paper 1 multiple choice (the most stable shape, and the fastest way to expose conceptual gaps), then five years of Paper 2 and Paper 4. The current syllabus covers the 2026-2028 sessions; older sessions differ in question style and mark distribution, so they are best taken topic by topic. Five years is the minimum, and topic-by-topic drilling wants eight to ten.

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the A-Level Economics 9708 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the A-Level Economics 9708 mock papers linked under Related.

By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.

How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.

What is the difference between Paper 2 and Paper 4?
The structure is similar (data response 20 plus micro essay 20 plus macro essay 20, 2 hours); Paper 2 is the AS paper and its essays are split into parts, while Paper 4 is the A Level paper with unstructured essays, so the argument has to be built from scratch. Drill Paper 2 first, then rewrite the same content as a single continuous essay for Paper 4.

If I sit only the AS Level, do I need Paper 4?
No. The AS Level is Paper 1 (multiple choice, 30 marks, 17%) and Paper 2 (data response and essays, 60 marks, 33%); Papers 3 and 4 belong to the A Level. The Paper 2 data response and essay structure are still the ground floor of Paper 4, so drill until all three parts fit inside 2 hours.
