AP Biology Drilling Guide: Both Sections, Free-Response Technique and a 12-Week Plan

AP Biology Drilling Guide: Both Sections, Free-Response Technique and a 12-Week Plan

  • 2026-10-24

TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · AP BIOLOGY, BOTH SECTIONS

Built on the College Board AP Biology format: Section I is 60 multiple-choice questions in 1 h 30 min for 50% of the score; Section II is 6 free-response questions in 1 h 30 min for the other 50%, made up of 2 long questions at 9 points and 4 short questions at 4 points – three hours in total, half the score in each section. Method only: drill order for both sections, how to earn free-response points, a 12-week timetable, pacing, the usual mark losses and the error log. For questions with answers use the mock paper linked below.

How is AP Biology assessed, and what does each part carry?

Section II (Free Response): 6 questions: 2 long (9 pts) + 4 short (4 pts) (50%); Section I (Multiple Choice): 60 questions, discrete or question sets (50%)

Section I: 60 questions in 1 h 30 min (50%). Section II: 6 questions in 1 h 30 min (50%) – neglect either section and you give up half the subject.

01

Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Section II (Free Response) 6 questions: 2 long (9 pts) + 4 short (4 pts) 50% 1 h 30 min
Section I (Multiple Choice) 60 questions, discrete or question sets 50% 1 h 30 min

In Section II state the formula or law, then substitute, then give the answer with its unit; for concepts give the definition and an example (respiration, ecology).

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Section II (Free Response) definition for concepts, steps for calculations Free response gives conclusions only: explanations never state the mechanism, and experimental questions never name the independent variable, the control or a source of error, so the points in each 9-mark long question go in a batch
Section I (Multiple Choice) eliminate clearly wrong options Multiple choice answered from memory without reading the figure first: question sets share one stimulus across four or five questions, and candidates who read the data before answering score higher

What is each AP Biology paper really testing, and what should you drill?

Section II (Free Response): definition for concepts, steps for calculations; Section I (Multiple Choice): eliminate clearly wrong options

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

Should drilling go by topic first or by year?

By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: AP Biology runs in four-revision-themes blocks, then alternates the two sections: weeks 1-4 drill Section I question sets under the four big ideas (evolution, energetics, information, systems), doing one extra thing per set – writing the independent and dependent variable beside the figure; weeks 5-8 move to Section II with two long questions (22 minutes each) and four short ones (8 minutes each) a week, writing scoring points rather than polished prose; weeks 9-10 sit both sections under time (1 h 30 min each, 10 minutes between); weeks 11-12 redo only the recurring error types and recompute the three calculation families – Hardy-Weinberg, energy flow and genetic ratios.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Section II (Free Response) 1 h 30 min about 22 min long, 8 min short
Section I (Multiple Choice) 1 h 30 min about 1.5 min per question

How should the time be split inside each AP Biology paper?

Section II (Free Response): about 22 min long, 8 min short; Section I (Multiple Choice): about 1.5 min per question

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
Wrong genetic ratio Aa x Aa as 1:1 A heterozygous cross gives 3:1 Dominant : recessive = 3:1
Hardy-Weinberg error Treating q^2 as q The recessive phenotype is q^2, take the square root q = sqrt(q^2)
Energy flow error Thinking energy increases up levels Energy decreases each level (heat loss) Only a small part passes to the next level
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Three columns, no copied questions: concept (the mechanism being tested – competitive versus non-competitive inhibition, for example), evidence (how the figure or the results support the answer, including the numbers or the direction of change) and wording (did you answer with the command word given: explain needs a mechanism, identify needs only a name, predict needs an observable outcome). Three entries in one column in a week means next week drills only that column.

08

How many years should you drill?

AP Biology is freshly written each year and only a limited number of complete released exams is public, so the useful target is not how many years but how many question sets per big idea: at least ten sets and five free-response questions for each of the four ideas, each answer checked point by point against the published scoring guidelines. The last five years of released material already covers the task types; further years only repeat them.

How many years of past papers is enough?

09

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the AP Biology drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the AP Biology mock papers linked under Related.

By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.

How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.

Both sections are worth 50% – can I drill only one?
No. Section I and Section II carry 50% each, so dropping one gives up half the subject; the data interpretation skill is common to both, and alternating improves both at once.

Are a calculator and the formula sheet allowed in the free response?
Yes. A four-function, scientific or graphing calculator is allowed throughout, with a two-sided equations and formulas sheet; the marks turn on writing the formula before substituting, not on remembering it.

Next step: find a tutor / register as a tutor

After drilling, the hard part is telling a conceptual error from a writing error. Tell us the year group, the school and your available times, and TutorZone will match you with a tutor who knows the HKEAA assessment requirements.
