HKDSE Chemistry Past Paper Drilling Guide: Paper 1 (60%) and Paper 2 (20%)

HKDSE Chemistry Past Paper Drilling Guide: Paper 1 (60%) and Paper 2 (20%)

TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · HKDSE CHEMISTRY

Marks in HKDSE Chemistry are rarely lost to ignorance and usually to imprecision: formulas, state symbols, units, significant figures and the cause-and-effect wording of explanations. So Chemistry drilling is less about volume than about checking every script against the marking scheme and recovering the scoring points you omitted.

How many papers does HKDSE Chemistry have, and what are they worth?

Direct answer: Paper 1 (compulsory) is 60% and lasts 2 hours 30 minutes – Section A multiple-choice carries 18% of the subject mark and Section B (short, structured and essay questions) carries 42%, all compulsory. Paper 2 (electives) is 20% and lasts 1 hour, consisting of structured questions on two chosen electives. School-based assessment is 20% for school candidates: two assessments in S5 (10%) and two in S6 (10%).

Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Paper 1 (Compulsory) Section A multiple-choice carries 18% of the subject mark; Section B (short, structured and essay questions) carries 42%; all questions compulsory 60% 2 h 30 min
Paper 2 (Electives) Structured questions carrying 20% of the subject mark; candidates answer questions on two chosen electives 20% 1 hour
School-based Assessment (SBA) School candidates only: two assessments in S5 (10%) and two in S6 (10%) 20% During the course

Chemistry Paper 1 Section B alone carries 42%, the single biggest source of marks, and it is marked strictly on presentation. After every Section B attempt, go through the marking scheme and highlight the scoring steps you omitted – that exercise is worth more than another whole paper.

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Paper 1 (Compulsory) Drill by topic – matter and change, atomic structure, acids and bases, redox, organic chemistry – writing the formula, state symbols and units every time Missing formulas or state symbols; explanations that state a conclusion without the cause; wrong units or significant figures
Paper 2 (Electives) Drill only your two electives, focusing on the required format for data handling and experimental design Drilling too many electives; data questions answered without working or units
School-based Assessment (SBA) Record titrations, weighings and observations in a live table rather than reconstructing them afterwards Data reconstructed later; uncertainty and error discussion written as a formality

Where do Chemistry marks actually leak?

Direct answer: in how Section B is written: (1) missing formulas or state symbols (s/l/g/aq); (2) explanations that give the conclusion without the causal chain; (3) data questions with no working or units; (4) inconsistent significant figures. All of these are fixable by marking your own script against the scheme – no new content required.

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

How many Chemistry electives should you drill?

Direct answer: only the two you will actually sit. Paper 2 is 20% in one hour and candidates answer questions on two chosen electives; spreading your effort over all four leaves a quarter of the depth on each, which is a textbook low-return strategy.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Half of Chemistry drilling should be spent marking and rewriting rather than attempting new papers; give week 11’s mark-scheme work at least four hours.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Paper 1 (Compulsory) 2 小時 30 分鐘 Section A about 28 min; Section B about 112 min; 10 min checking
Paper 2 (Electives) 1 小時 About 25 min per elective; 10 min checking
School-based Assessment (SBA) 修業期間 Two assessments in S5 and two in S6, roughly one a term

How should the 150 minutes of Paper 1 be split?

Direct answer: about 28 minutes for Section A, 112 minutes for Section B and 10 minutes for checking. In Section B, leave one line to name the principle or equation you are applying: the marking scheme usually rewards the correct principle, and candidates most often write a description of the result and lose it.

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
Attempting without marking Answers checked, errors noted and forgotten Formula, state-symbol and unit errors repeat for months Mark every Section B against the scheme and highlight the missing scoring steps
Drilling all four electives Covering everything just in case None of them is deep enough and Paper 2 suffers Drill only the two electives you sit
Conclusions without causes Explanations reduced to one asserted statement Essay and explanation questions lose half their marks Write the full causal chain: observation, principle, conclusion
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Split the Chemistry error log into knowledge and presentation (or two columns of one book). Within months the presentation side shows the same offenders: missing state symbols, missing units, reversed causality. Fixing presentation beats re-reading the textbook.

08

How many years should you drill?

Ten years covers the compulsory content, the latest five must be sat fully timed, and earlier years serve your weak topics. The elective paper examines two topics only, so five to eight years suffices.

How many years of HKDSE Chemistry past papers should you drill?

Direct answer: no official figure, but Chemistry’s compulsory topics and question types are stable, so the most recent ten years cover the main ground. Because Chemistry marks are lost to presentation, fewer papers marked properly beat many papers marked carelessly: sit the latest five years fully timed and use earlier years for topic-specific work.

09

Frequently asked questions

Does the written exam test practical skills?
Yes. Paper 1 Section B includes experiment-based questions (design, data handling, error discussion), so practical content is not only for the SBA.

Is a periodic table or data sheet provided?
The required data and the periodic table are provided, but common formulas, equations and mole relationships must be known cold, or time runs out.

Do significant figures cost marks?
Yes. Candidates are expected to give answers of appropriate accuracy, and wrong significant figures or units lose marks.
