HKDSE Physics Paper 1: 150-Minute Pacing, MC 21% and Long Questions 39%
- 2026-10-09
TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · HKDSE PHYSICS PAPER 1
Physics Paper 1 is 60% of the subject in 2 hours 30 minutes, the heaviest single source of marks; the framework sets Section A multiple-choice at 21% and Section B conventional questions at 39%. Paper 2 electives are 20% and SBA a further 20%.
What is in HKDSE Physics Paper 1?
Direct answer: Paper 1 is 60% of the subject in 2 hours 30 minutes, in two parts: Section A multiple-choice 21% and Section B conventional questions 39%, all compulsory. Physics also has Paper 2 electives (20%, 1 hour) and SBA (20%).

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section A · multiple-choice | 21% of the subject; basic concepts and graph reading across the Compulsory Part | 21% | 35-40 min suggested |
| Section B · conventional questions | 39% of the subject; formulas, substitution and units must be shown, with experimental and graphical explanations | 39% | 95-105 min suggested |
Physics has a quirk: Paper 1 (60%) and Paper 2 (20%) cover different material, so Paper 1 alone will not do. A steady weekly rhythm of two Paper 1s and one Paper 2 prevents discovering an untouched elective in the final week.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Section A · multiple-choice | Drill unit and dimensional checking: many MC items lose three options on units alone | Calculating too long and eating into the 39% Section B |
| Section B · conventional questions | Name the law and formula first, then substitute; answer explanation items with a full because-therefore sentence | Answers without units; conclusions with no reasoning in explanation items |
How should the 150 minutes be split?
Direct answer: follow the weightings: about 35-40 minutes for Section A MC (21%) and 95-105 minutes for Section B (39%), with 10 minutes to check units, significant figures and unanswered sub-parts. The common error is spending over 50 minutes on MC and starving the heavier Section B.
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
How do you earn method marks in long questions?
Direct answer: three fixed moves: state the law or formula used, substitute the values with units, then give the answer with its unit and, where asked, discuss whether it is reasonable. Explanation items take a full because-therefore sentence naming the data or trend observed.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Two full timed Paper 1s a week alongside one Paper 2 elective paper, so neither elective falls behind.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Section A · multiple-choice | 建議 35–40 分鐘 | About 1.5 min per question |
| Section B · conventional questions | 建議 95–105 分鐘 | 8-12 min per question; 10 min checking |
How should graph questions be trained?
Direct answer: Graph items are lost three ways: misreading the axis units, ignoring the plotted data, or writing “it rises” without the rate or proportionality. After every graph question, state in one line what the axes represent and what the gradient means; get those three right and the marks follow.
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow MC | Chasing every MC mark | Section B’s 39% is squeezed | Keep MC to 35-40 minutes, flag and skip hard items |
| No units | Bare numbers | Physics marking requires units | Write units everywhere and check each answer |
| Compulsory Part only | Ignoring Paper 2 | Paper 2 is 20% and can feel unfamiliar | One Paper 2 a week: the formats differ from Paper 1 |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: concept, calculation and expression. The third clears fastest – usually within two or three weeks.
How many years should you drill?
Paper 1 is stable and ten years covers almost all of the Compulsory Part; Paper 2 electives need their own drilling.
How many years of Paper 1 should you drill?
Direct answer: no official figure. Paper 1 formats are stable and ten years covers almost all Compulsory Part concepts and experiments; with less time do the latest five fully timed. Paper 2 electives need separate drilling: they are 20% and cover only your chosen units.
Frequently asked questions
Is a calculator allowed?
Yes, an electronic calculator may be used.
Can I neglect one elective?
Paper 2 covers the electives you study; follow the HKEAA paper instructions, and keep both drilled.
How is experimental work assessed?
SBA is 20% of the subject and includes practical assessment; Paper 1 also sets experimental scenarios.
