IB Digital Society Paper 1 Drill Guide: Choosing, Pacing, Counter-Claims
- 2026-11-04
The choice of question decides the marks
Paper 1 asks for two of four questions, and choosing is the first scoring move: pick the one where you hold a real example that carries all three parts, not the one that merely looks familiar. Part c carries most of the marks and needs two sides, a criterion and a judgement, with the concepts, content and context named explicitly. HL adds an extended response that must address counter-claims; a one-sided argument stays low. An example named only is worthless without a sentence or two tying it to the question.
How is IB Digital Society Paper 1 assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 1 (SL/HL): Two of four structured questions (20 marks each: a 6 / b 6 / c 8); HL (SL 40% / HL 35%); Paper 2 (common to SL and HL): Four source-based questions, all compulsory (2 + 4 + 6 + 12 marks) (SL 30% / HL 20%); Paper 3 (HL only): Four compulsory questions (4 + 6 + 8 + 12 marks) evaluating an interve (HL 25%); Internal assessment: inquiry project: Inquiry process document (max 1,500 words) + recorded multimedia prese (SL 30% / HL 20%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (SL/HL) | Two of four structured questions (20 marks each: a 6 / b 6 / c 8); HL adds one of two 12-mark extended responses | SL 40% / HL 35% | SL 1 h 30 min / HL 2 h 15 min |
| Paper 2 (common to SL and HL) | Four source-based questions, all compulsory (2 + 4 + 6 + 12 marks) | SL 30% / HL 20% | 1 h 15 min |
| Paper 3 (HL only) | Four compulsory questions (4 + 6 + 8 + 12 marks) evaluating an intervention against the pre-release statement issued four months earlier | HL 25% | 1 h 15 min |
| Internal assessment: inquiry project | Inquiry process document (max 1,500 words) + recorded multimedia presentation (max 10 min) + list of references; criteria A 3 / B 6 / C 6 / D 6 / E 3 | SL 30% / HL 20% | 30 hours |
Drilling technique: write every part c in three moves – both sides, explicit criteria, conclusion – and always name the concept, content and context given in the question (marked in the answers). Never give an example as a name only: add one or two sentences explaining how it relates to the question. HL Section B explicitly requires counter-claims, so a one-sided answer cannot reach the top bands.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (SL/HL) | concept x content x context, with a real-world example in every question | Question chosen on familiarity alone. |
| Paper 2 (common to SL and HL) | origin, perspective and method of sources; Q3 requires comparing two sources | Part c argues one side with no judgement. |
| Paper 3 (HL only) | effectiveness, limits and recommendations for future action | Examples are named but never tied to the question. |
| Internal assessment: inquiry project | inquiry focus, claims and perspectives, analysis and evaluation, conclusion, communication | Paper 2 source skills reused as if they were Paper 1 answers. |
What is each IB Digital Society Paper 1 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (SL/HL): concept x content x context, with a real-world example in every question; Paper 2 (common to SL and HL): origin, perspective and method of sources; Q3 requires comparing two sources; Paper 3 (HL only): effectiveness, limits and recommendations for future action; Internal assessment: inquiry project: inquiry focus, claims and perspectives, analysis and evaluation, conclusion, communication
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: choosing only, eight minutes to read all four questions and write which real example you hold for each, before comparing with what you actually answered. Weeks 4-6: part c only, in a fixed three-move shape of one side, the other side with a criterion, then a judgement, three sentences each. Weeks 7-9: timed papers at 12, 12 and 16 minutes, logging which part overruns. Weeks 10-12: HL extended responses only, writing the strongest counter-claim before answering it.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (SL/HL) | SL 1 h 30 min / HL 2 h 15 min | about 40 min per structured question (a 12, b 12, c 16) |
| Paper 2 (common to SL and HL) | 1 h 15 min | Q1 5 min, Q2 10 min, Q3 20 min, Q4 35 min (keep 5 min to check) |
| Paper 3 (HL only) | 1 h 15 min | 10 min reading the pre-release statement and stimulus, then 65 min across the questions |
| Internal assessment: inquiry project | 30 hours | Choose a real case, write the inquiry question first, then collect primary evidence |
How should the time be split inside each IB Digital Society Paper 1 paper?
Paper 1 (SL/HL): about 40 min per structured question (a 12, b 12, c 16); Paper 2 (common to SL and HL): Q1 5 min, Q2 10 min, Q3 20 min, Q4 35 min (keep 5 min to check); Paper 3 (HL only): 10 min reading the pre-release statement and stimulus, then 65 min across the questions; Internal assessment: inquiry project: Choose a real case, write the inquiry question first, then collect primary evidence
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Knowledge only, no argument | Copying definitions | part c lands in the 1-2 band | Every judgement needs evidence and a real example |
| Ignoring the given concept or context | Writing generally about online safety | Off-task answers score zero for part b | Underline the concept, content and context first |
| Examples given as a name only | Stopping at ‘for example a social platform’ | The guide requires the example to be explained | Example plus one or two sentences of explanation |
| One-sided HL extended response | Only benefits or only harms | Cannot reach the 9-12 band | Both sides + counter-claims + conclusion |
| Writing part c like part a | Describing without evaluating | Level descriptors credit evaluation and synthesis only | Three moves: both sides, criteria, conclusion |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: the question and the part (a, b, c, HL extended); whether the loss was a thin example, a one-sided argument, a missing concept term, an unused context, or bad pacing; the repair, naming the example to swap or the counter-claim to add. Three losses of one kind takes the next week.
How many years should you drill?
First assessment for this course was in 2024, so the number of sessions is limited and past papers cannot carry a year-by-year plan. Work from the official guide’s specimen questions and original mocks instead: rewriting the same question with new examples and contexts beats chasing years.

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IB Digital Society Paper 1 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IB Digital Society Paper 1 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
Is SL answered the same way as HL?
Same structure, but HL adds a 12-mark extended response and 45 more minutes. SL needs dense structured answers; HL must reserve time for counter-claims. Neither rewards even time splits.
Can prepared examples be reused?
Yes, if they genuinely fit the question’s concept and context. One example meets three questions in three different ways, so what needs practice is the sentence that joins example to question.
