IB Digital Society Drilling Guide (SL and HL): a/b/c Questions, Pacing and a 12-Week Plan

  • 2026-10-16

TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · IB DIGITAL SOCIETY PAPERS 1-3

Built on the IB Digital Society assessment: Paper 1 is 40 marks in 1 h 30 at SL (40%) and 52 marks in 2 h 15 at HL (35%); Paper 2 30%/20%; Paper 3 (HL only) 25%; the inquiry project 30%/20%. Method only – drill order for the a/b/c structured questions, a 12-week timetable, pacing and the error log.

How is IB Digital Society assessed, and what does each part carry?

Paper 1 (SL/HL): Two of four structured questions (20 marks each: a 6 / b 6 / c 8); HL (SL 40% / HL 35%); Paper 2 (common to SL and HL): Four source-based questions, all compulsory (2 + 4 + 6 + 12 marks) (SL 30% / HL 20%); Paper 3 (HL only): Four compulsory questions (4 + 6 + 8 + 12 marks) evaluating an interve (HL 25%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Paper 1 (SL/HL) Two of four structured questions (20 marks each: a 6 / b 6 / c 8); HL adds one of two 12-mark extended responses SL 40% / HL 35% SL 1 h 30 min / HL 2 h 15 min
Paper 2 (common to SL and HL) Four source-based questions, all compulsory (2 + 4 + 6 + 12 marks) SL 30% / HL 20% 1 h 15 min
Paper 3 (HL only) Four compulsory questions (4 + 6 + 8 + 12 marks) evaluating an intervention against the pre-release statement issued four months earlier HL 25% 1 h 15 min
Internal assessment: inquiry project Inquiry process document (max 1,500 words) + recorded multimedia presentation (max 10 min) + list of references; criteria A 3 / B 6 / C 6 / D 6 / E 3 SL 30% / HL 20% 30 hours

Drilling technique: write every part c in three moves – both sides, explicit criteria, conclusion – and always name the concept, content and context given in the question (marked in the answers). Never give an example as a name only: add one or two sentences explaining how it relates to the question. HL Section B explicitly requires counter-claims, so a one-sided answer cannot reach the top bands.

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Paper 1 (SL/HL) concept x content x context, with a real-world example in every question Knowledge without argument: (a) repeats definitions, (b) and (c) never apply the context, so (c) stays in the bottom band
Paper 2 (common to SL and HL) origin, perspective and method of sources; Q3 requires comparing two sources Never quoting the supplied sources; Q3 asks for a comparison of two sources and only one is used
Paper 3 (HL only) effectiveness, limits and recommendations for future action Ignoring what the pre-released document asks for; recommendations stay generic and never name limitations or next steps
Internal assessment: inquiry project inquiry focus, claims and perspectives, analysis and evaluation, conclusion, communication Collecting data before framing the inquiry question, so criteria C and D have nothing to evaluate against

What is each IB Digital Society paper really testing, and what should you drill?

Paper 1 (SL/HL): concept x content x context, with a real-world example in every question; Paper 2 (common to SL and HL): origin, perspective and method of sources; Q3 requires comparing two sources; Paper 3 (HL only): effectiveness, limits and recommendations for future action; Internal assessment: inquiry project: inquiry focus, claims and perspectives, analysis and evaluation, conclusion, communication

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

Should drilling go by topic first or by year?

By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Digital Society splits by part, not by paper: weeks 1-4 are (a) questions only (6 marks in 12 minutes, concept, content and context all present), weeks 5-7 are (b) (explain the link with a real example), weeks 8-10 attack (c) (both sides, a criterion, a conclusion, checked against the level descriptors), and only weeks 11-12 go to timed whole papers and the HL Section B essay. Fix the inquiry question before week 6.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Paper 1 (SL/HL) SL 1 h 30 min / HL 2 h 15 min about 40 min per structured question (a 12, b 12, c 16)
Paper 2 (common to SL and HL) 1 h 15 min Q1 5 min, Q2 10 min, Q3 20 min, Q4 35 min (keep 5 min to check)
Paper 3 (HL only) 1 h 15 min 10 min reading the pre-release statement and stimulus, then 65 min across the questions
Internal assessment: inquiry project 30 hours Choose a real case, write the inquiry question first, then collect primary evidence

How should the time be split inside each IB Digital Society paper?

Paper 1 (SL/HL): about 40 min per structured question (a 12, b 12, c 16); Paper 2 (common to SL and HL): Q1 5 min, Q2 10 min, Q3 20 min, Q4 35 min (keep 5 min to check); Paper 3 (HL only): 10 min reading the pre-release statement and stimulus, then 65 min across the questions; Internal assessment: inquiry project: Choose a real case, write the inquiry question first, then collect primary evidence

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
Knowledge only, no argument Copying definitions part c lands in the 1-2 band Every judgement needs evidence and a real example
Ignoring the given concept or context Writing generally about online safety Off-task answers score zero for part b Underline the concept, content and context first
Examples given as a name only Stopping at ‘for example a social platform’ The guide requires the example to be explained Example plus one or two sentences of explanation
One-sided HL extended response Only benefits or only harms Cannot reach the 9-12 band Both sides + counter-claims + conclusion
Writing part c like part a Describing without evaluating Level descriptors credit evaluation and synthesis only Three moves: both sides, criteria, conclusion
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Three columns: concept (is the concept the question names actually used), evidence (is there a real example with an explanation), judgement (are both sides and a criterion present). Three repeats in one column means stop doing new questions and rewrite that column only – part (c) is banded on evaluation and synthesis, so a one-sided answer cannot reach the top band.

08

How many years should you drill?

Digital Society was first assessed in 2024, so only the 2024 and 2025 sessions exist and there is little to drill by year. Work the guide and pre-released examples question by question, then use original mock papers for volume: the concept-evidence-judgement chain matters more than the number of years.

09

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IB Digital Society drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IB Digital Society mock papers linked under Related.

By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.

How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.

When is the Paper 3 pre-released document published?
Paper 3 is HL only (25%) and the document plus stimulus are released one to four months before the exam. Read it, list the intervention’s effects and limitations, then budget the four questions (4/6/8/12) accordingly.

Can the inquiry project use online sources only?
Not advisable. Criterion B wants method and sources, and only primary data (interviews, surveys, observation or platform data) supports the analysis and evaluation in criteria C and D.
