03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 Three: el-e-phant. Elephant has three beats: el-e-phant.
2 night. Light and night share the ending -ight, so they rhyme.
3 Three: com-pu-ter. Computer has three beats, com-pu-ter, with the stress on pu.
4 Open the book at page 12. Hear the verb open first, then the number twelve: page 12.
5 On the second syllable: ba-NA-na. The stress in banana sits on the second beat: ba-NA-na.
6 Three: beau-ti-ful. Beautiful is said in three beats with the stress on beau.
7 Put the pens down. Instructions come in order, so pens go down before you look up.
8 Because “can” is weak and short while “can’t” is stressed and longer. Can is weak and quick; can’t is stressed with a longer vowel.
9 Hold on a moment, please. I will get him. Ask the caller to hold on, then go and fetch the person.
10 Could you say that again, please? Repeat already means again, so say that again, please.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
